Kids and cell phones

Yesterday I had to go talk to Jordyn's teacher before school. We were walking through the halls and I saw a girl ahead of us. Just then she dropped a cell phone and picked it up. I heard her say into the phone, oops, I dropped my phone! She looked younger than Jordyn (who is in 2nd grade) Then I saw her walk into a 1st grade classroom! Unbelievable!

I think 1st grade is WAY too young to have a cell phone!

I do understand the need for older kids to have cell phones. Rob and I were just discussing it the other day. I have a prepaid cheapy cell and we are thinking about getting me a new one. Then Rob mentioned that it would be nice for Si to have a phone for when he goes to friends houses or school activities or whatever and we can reach him and he can reach us. So, we are mulling over handing my prepaid over to Si. There will be restrictions and he won't have it all the time, but I think it would be good to have.

1st grade is definitely to young to have a phone! Tracy is a senior in high school now and my parents still wont let her get a phone.

I was just having this conversation with my husband yesterday. A friend of mine bought cell phones for her 6 and 8 yr olds. They were just playing with them, no apparent restrictions. We decided that around 12 we would consider getting Jonathan one of the prepaid phones.

It's amazing, isnt' it? Why on earth do little kids need them? We all grew up w/o cell phones and we managed to turn out to be decent adults. Pretty pathetic.
